Canberra United are pleased to announce the signing of energetic midfielder Emily Roach for the 2022/2023 Liberty A-League Season.
Roach, who has been impressing with Heidelberg United in the Victorian Women’s National Premier League where she has scored four times in sixteen appearances in 2022, becomes the latest talent to head to Canberra as Head Coach Njegosh Popovich continues the club rebuild.
Having come through the system in Queensland, enjoying a fruitful spell at the Queensland Academy of Sport, Roach has been a standout defensively in a Heidelberg side that are challenging for the League title in Victoria.
“Emily is an exciting prospect who has been working hard on her game and deserves the chance to show who quality in the Liberty A-League,” Popovich said of the new signing.
“We have been keeping an eye on her progress in Victoria and she has all the necessary ability to succeed at the top level.
“Emily possesses terrific work rate in midfield, superb ball dribbling capabilities, the ability to control the speed of game and is able to break lines with passes to unlock a defence.
“I am positive that Emily will have a big impact at the club and am looking forward to working with her and developing her game.”
This will be Roach’s first chance to shine in the top-level of the Women’s game, but her talent has not been in doubt, having been identified as part of the Future Matildas program whilst playing in her native Queensland having shone at the National Youth Championships in Maroon.
“I am really excited about the opportunity to come and play for Canberra United in the Liberty Women’s A-League,” Roach said.
“It was a dream come true to be selected by Njegosh to join the team for the new season and I can’t wait to get to Canberra, to meet the other players and staff, and to begin work for the new season.
“I am familiar with the club having watched them a lot in the A-League and have been impressed by the Canberra United supporters who always make plenty of noise in following their team.
“I’m looking forward to showing them what I can do.”
