Powerchair League Champions Woden Valley SC showed on Saturday 6 August that they are still the team to beat. In what was a dominant performance by Woden Valley SC they saw off Gungahlin United defeating their opponents by five clear goals and keeping a clean sheet in the process.
Brandon Stroud, who was named Player of the Match, opened the scoring when he got in the clear and only had the goalkeeper to beat. The goalkeeper saved the first shot which then went back to Stroud who tapped into the goal.
For the second goal Woden Valley made a break and a mistimed contact from Gungahlin United player Giovanni Tiyce which led to an own goal and made the score 2-0 going into the half-time break.
The second half saw a closer match where it took a while for the ball to cross the line. Cate Lyons nabbed her first goal of the season through some smart play. Cate drove through the middle of the field and beat the goalkeeper.
Right near the end of the match two quick goals were scored with Stroud scoring a second goal. The goalkeeper had a difficult shot to stop, with the ball bouncing just the slightest bit too much for them to handle.
Right before the full-time whistle went Woden Valley had one more in them with Jamie Larsen scoring the final goal of the match giving Woden Valley a 5-0 victory.
Upon reflection of the game, Woden Valley’s Brandon Stroud commented on how his team performed in the second fixture.
“That was a great way to start our title defence for the Powerchair League,” Stroud commented. “It was great to see how much communication there was amongst the team which is part of the reason why it was such a great win. However, the next game will be difficult as Gungahlin United will want to get one over us”.
