Reilly Yuen smashed nine goals as the South Canberra Swift thrashed Queanbeyan-Palerang Power 30-0 in a one-sided contest at Daramalan College to keep up the pressure on the league leading West Canberra Lightning.
Yuen had grabbed five by half-time in a rout that saw the Power adrift 12-0 at the break, their cause not helped by a straight red card issued to Joselyn Ibarra for handball leading to a penalty that Swift goalkeeper Emily Pearce converted.
Goals flowed at regular intervals, Isabella Hindmarsh, Sienna Birnie and Sofia Palywoda all claiming four each. With Ginger Oliver and Kaitlyn Colwill both netting a hat-trick against their overrun opponents, the swift saw six of their number bag multiple goals in the contest, a league record.
Alyse Jensen and Samantha Price were the other scorers as Swift set a Capital Futsal League record winning margin, and equalled the most number of goals scored in a match in the process.
UC Stars stunned North Canberra Fire on Friday evening with a performance of sheer grit and no little ability as they came from behind twice to secure a memorable 5-2 victory and to move onto nine points with a third win of the campaign.
Vanessa Burdett was superb in goal for the Stars, repelling the Fire attackers with a regularity that bordered on miraculous at times, but in truth this was a performance of heart and soul from the entire squad, led by the defensive skills of Jada Lamond and Eliza-Jane Norris, the foraging of Maddie Steinacker and the goals of Ella Palframan
Nikita Perry had given the Stars the lead in a tight first-half, breaking the deadlock in the 17th minute, only for Palframan to snaffle the equaliser mere seconds later as the pair went in deadlocked at 1-1 at the break.
Pearl Tein scooped in the Fire’s second a couple of minutes after the restart to restore the lead, only for the Stars to respond in kind again, Steinacker levelling from close range before Palframan edged them in front. A fourth goal, struck by Norris was the difference, forcing the Fire to throw players forward and allowing Palframan to complete her treble late on.
Hat-tricks from Brittany Palombi and Jamie Berkeley ensured that West Canberra Lightning extended their unbeaten streak in the CFL, moving onto seventeen matches unbeaten, but they were made to work extremely hard for the win by ANU Apex, eventually prevailing 8-4.
Stand-in ANU goalkeeper Sofia Chaverra was in belligerent mood between the sticks for the Apex, repelling nearly everything that West Canberra Lightning could throw at her in the opening twenty minutes of the contest, but was eventually between after four minutes as Brittany Palombi latched onto a forward pass and lashed a left foot effort into the net.
Palombi doubled her, and her team’s tally, after quarter-of-an-hour as she blasted home a penalty, the first in the Women’s CFL competition history, after she was up-ended by a desperate tackle from the impressive Edith Fordyce-Croker.
Far from buckling, the Apex hit back and Ailish McDonagh found space close to goal to steer a low effort beyond the reach of Natalie Lacey in the Lightning net for only the second goal that ANU have scored against their opponents in this, the fourth meeting.
After the team returned goals flowed at regular intervals as Jennifer Bisset and Madeliene Perceval scored for Lightning, whilst Berkeley and Palombi completed trebles, but with strikes from Emily Robertson, a seventh of the season, Edith Fordyce-Croker, and Pascale La Hei, the Apex were never blown away and can be pleased with a much-improved display.
