ANU FC have moved into contention to challenge Queanbeyan City at the top of the Capital Premier League following a 5-0 hammering of West Canberra Wanderers at Melrose Synthetic. The win means that should ANU claim the points in their game in hand, they can move into second, five points adrift of the leaders.
Two goals inside the opening dozen minutes effectively sealed the win for the University club early on as Tao Wang opened the scoring six minutes in, closely followed by a second from Jiachan Lang as ANU FC got off to the best possible start at Melrose High School.
Thereafter, Wanderers rallied, but a second goal from Wang, a minute into the second-half, put aside any thoughts of a Wanderers recovery as ANU moved into a three-goal lead. A late brace from Ethan Krug finished the match in style for ANU who eventually won the match in some comfort.
Queanbeyan City are still very much in control of their own destiny however and moved a point closer to promotion as they earned a point from a 0-0 draw with Belconnen United at McKellar Park.
The goalless draw could easily have been a Blue Devils win, a result that might have opened up the championship chase, but when hadn’t the chance to claim the points from a penalty Belconnen were unable to make the opportunity count.
The usually unflappable midfielder Dustin Wells saw his spot-kick well saved by City stopper Nick Middleton, and neither side was able to make the crucial breakthrough. Belconnen remain second but could drop down to third if ANU FC gain at least a point in the catch-up match with White Eagles.
Goals were at a premium elsewhere as Brindabella Blues were forced to dig deep to secure a merited, but unconvincing 1-0 victory over White Eagles in their fixture at Ipan Park in Calwell.
The Blues, who are still in contention to finish at least runners-up in the division, netted the only goal of the match in the first minute of first-half stoppage time as Oliver Witrzens bagged his seventh of an excellent season in front of goal.
And it was a similar tale at Gissing Oval in Wagga as Canberra Juventus returned from their interstate foray with all three points courtesy of a 1-0 victory over Wagga City Wanderers in a close fought encounter.
Nathan Duck supplied the only goal of the match, keeping his head to net from a penalty on the half-hour mark. The visitors ended the match with ten men after substitute Fahad Ramadhan was sent off two minutes from time to set up a nervy finale.
Wagga were unable to create the equaliser in the time that remained however, and Juventus could celebrate a fourth win of the season which moved them to within four points of Wanderers with a match in hand.
