NPLW Capital Football goalkeepers are receiving hands on training from one of the best coaches in the business thanks to a new initiative from Capital Football in 2019.
Former Westfield Matildas goalkeeping coach Paul Jones is providing specialist training for all NPLW club goalkeepers on Wednesday nights for the duration of the 2019 season.
Running at Hawker Football Centre each week, the sessions are aimed at helping develop our female goalkeepers inside the NPLW environment.
After consultation with NPLW coaches prior to the season, the general consensus was that there was a lack of available female goalkeepers to play at the NPLW level, and not all teams had access to a goalkeeping coach.
From this he was approached to discuss putting these sessions on for the players and Jones, who runs his own Paul Jones Goalkeeping Academy, was only happy to oblige.
Club coaches are also able to attend the sessions to observe and assist Paul, helping their own learning, and the program is run at no cost to the club.
As well as helping the players to further their development, Jones hopes that the biggest takeaway for the girls is enjoying the program.
“I hope the girls enjoy this program and that this will help them to develop their passion for goalkeeping,” Jones said.
“Goalkeeping is one of the toughest positions on the field, not only from a physical aspect but from the mental perspective too.”
“Goalkeepers need to be strong leaders and working with this group there are some really strong people in here.”
“They are nice people too, they even laugh at my dad jokes,” he added.
