The title is on the line this weekend as Belconnen United and Canberra Olympic battle it out at the top of the National Premier League for the points that would allow Belconnen to level the playing field or send the Olympic side soaring off with the title of League Champions.
Going head-to-head for the 21st time since the beginning of the NPL era, the Blue Devils lead the victory count by fifteen wins to four, with one match having ended all-square. When the teams have faced each other outside of the NPL competition, there have been a further six matches where Olympic lead four to two.
In those past 20 matches over the last 10 years, a total of 102 goals have been scored between the two teams. Of those 102, only 16 of them have been scored by Canberra Olympic, leaving the remaining 86 goals to be accounted by Belconnen.
This weekend’s monumental clash will be held at McKellar Park, where the Belconnen side have won 100% of all matches played at this venue. In fact, Canberra Olympic have only ever scored four goals against the Blue Devils at the Belconnen location, with only one of those being scored in the last four matches held there.
This means that of a total thirty points up for grabs in the competition between the pair when they’ve taken each other on at the Belconnen ground, Canberra Olympic has only managed to walk away with just one of them!
Both Belconnen United and Canberra Olympic have been collected some fantastic results and statistics this year. While Olympic might be sitting in the number one position on the table at the moment, Belconnen united sit only three points behind them, with both having won once in the NPLW meetings to date.
This battle for the League Championship face-off will not be one you want to miss. Will Canberra Olympic secure the title of this year’s NPLW League Champions and extend their lead to an unbreachable six points?
Or will Belconnen United manage to even the playing field and live onto send the title into the final week of the season? If it comes down to goal difference after next week, the Blue Devils will enter as favourites.
If you want to get in on the action, come on down to McKellar Park on Sunday 25 August with kick-off at 3pm, or tune into BarTV for live action with commentary from Russ Gibbs and Sam Watson.
