The recent Female Football Week was another massive success for all involved, with plenty turning out at Capital Football events eager to learn more about the game and celebrate the incredible contribution of women and girls in football.
The Girls Only Futsal Come ‘n’ Try session on Friday 19th May, proved to be a popular event with close to 30 people in attendance wanting to learn about the quickly growing game. Taking place at Dickson College, the group spent the evening learning about the game and being put through their paces with some drills. The group was split into four teams for a mini ‘World Cup’ style round of games, with everyone putting the skills that they had learnt into practice.
On Wednesday 24th May, a group of dedicated referees came out to Hawker Football Centre for an ‘Open Skills Session’ led by current and former A-Leagues referees. Participants were led through exercises that helped ‘simulate’ match-like moments, to better their understanding of the game and decision making in matches.
The week wrapped up with the Networking and Awards Brunch, with a panel of experts in the female football community sharing their experiences as well-respected figures and representatives of the game locally. The morning ended with the Female Football Week Awards, where we recognised the incredible contributions of women and girls in football, and highlighted the extremely important role that they play across all aspects of the game, and were voted on by the Canberra Football community.
The awards were Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Referee of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and Ally Champion of the Year. You can read all the award winners here.
Capital Football thank everyone for taking part in our 2023 Female Football Week activities.
