South Canberra Swift got their Season 3 Capital Futsal League campaign off to the best possible start with an 8-5 victory over the defending Champions, UC Stars, in the only match played in the opening Round at the Australian Institute of Sport Training Halls.

The lack of availability of suitably qualified referees, meant that the quadruple header scheduled for Sunday was unfortunately postponed but, by that stage, Swift had already made a statement of intent of their own by kicking off the new season, which is due to be completed this side of Christmas, with a victory.

That it came at the expense of the Stars, the standout team from Season 2, was a bonus and the Swift got off to a flying start as new signing Marco Gayer hit the ground running with the opening goal after just one minute of play. The match ebbed after that as Anthong Giorgi, on debut for Stars, equalised, but Swift suddenly turned the screw.

Goals from Romeo, Marcus Crispe, Tony Spaseski, and Gayer again in quick succession put the Swift 5-1 up and, despite Giorgi reducing the arrears, the Swift had a firm hold of proceedings at the interval.

Jayde James-Ward pulled one back to instigate some measure of hope at 5-3, but Romeo and Ryan Straub took the game out of Stars reach with goals before the half-hour mark. Giorgi completed his treble, and James-Ward netted again as the score came back to 7-5 but Swift had the final word as Patrick Shore netted on the break to complete the win.
