Canberra Croatia FC have got their first piece of silverware for the year, winning the Federation Cup final 4-1 over a spirited West Canberra Wanderers FC.
It was the perfect start for Croatia as they went ahead early through Brittany Palombi. With a deflected cross falling to the feet of Palombi, the striker lobbing Janet King from out wide.
It took Wanderers just under 20 minutes to hit back, levelling the scores off a corner. With the ball falling to an unmarked Ana Sofia Chaverra Calle, she made no mistake in slotting the ball past Ally Hinson in goal.
The match turned into a cagey affair as neither side could create enough clear-cut chances, with both defences standing strong. Jamie Berkeley had a great opportunity to put Croatia back in front right before the break but some desperate defending out her off as she sent the shot over the crossbar.
Croatia created majority of chances in the second half but had trouble breaking through a Wanderers defence that was up for the challenge.
Wanderers would make their own chances with Emma Stanbury launching her side forward, but had no luck breaking through centre-back pairing of Fensom and Matic.
With little over 10 minutes, Canberra Croatia would show their class with three goals to wrap up the result.
Palombi grabbed her second, smashing home a well-placed pass from Grace Gill, before Chantel Jones was first to the ball off a rebounded penalty to put the result beyond doubt.
Palombi would get her hattrick as she slotted the ball home off a Jones header. The win gave Nik Brozinic’s their first trophy of the year, running out 4-1 winners.
