Young defender Ava Piazza is the latest to sign on for Canberra United ahead of the forthcoming Liberty A-League season. The 18-year-old joins United after impressing for Football New South Wales Institute and Heidelberg United.
It was at the latter club, showcasing her talents in the Victorian National Premier League, that Piazza was selected for the Young Matildas training camp under Head Coach Leah Blayney, impressing enough to earn her call-up.
“I am pleased to be able to sign for Canberra United and am looking forward to the upcoming Liberty A-League season,” Piazza said of her signing ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.
“The project really appealed to me, and I have settled in nicely. The culture of this club is first-class, the coaching team are superb, and I can’t wait to sample the famous Canberra United supporters at McKellar Park.
“The reputation of Canberra United is well-known, the squad is very impressive, and I am looking forward to improving my game.”
Piazza has had an interesting journey to Canberra having played for APIA Leichhardt and Sydney University. She also spent time as part of the Sydney FC Boys Academy that plays in the New South Wales National Premier League competition.
Her form at Heidelberg United in Victoria led to her selection for the Young Matildas and brought her to the attention of Njegosh Popovich and the Canberra United coaching staff.
“Ava is a very young talent but has shown what a wonderful player she has the potential to be in her performances for Heidelberg and the Young Matildas,” Popovich, United’s Head Coach commented.
“Her profile fits in perfectly with our philosophy at Canberra United of harnessing young players, working on their game, and developing first-class footballers. Ava fits the bill with her ability to play out from the back, her dynamism in and out of possession, and her willingness to adapt.
“Ava has already shown that he is very coachable in her time at the club, and we are confident she will form an important part of our squad for the new season.”
