It’s as you were in the Capital Premier League as the top four all won in their fixtures against the bottom four meaning that Queanbeyan City, who claimed a 3-0 win over Wagga City Wanderers at High Street, remain five points clear at the top of the league table and in pole position for promotion.
As usual it was the Argentine striker Niko Abot who did the damage for the hosts, the forward having struck twice more to move onto a magnificent 21 goals for the season having opened his account for the afternoon from the penalty spot in only the tenth minute of the match.
Abot was to add a second for the home team on the hour, Queanbeyan securing the points with a third in stoppage time as Abderrahim Dellahi scored his eighth of the season. Wagga meanwhile continue to fall off the pace after their highly promising start to the campaign.
Brindabella Blues are close on the heels of Queanbeyan City, and they continued their impressive recent run of form by dismantling West Canberra Wanderers at Ipan Park in Calwell building up a five-goal half-time lead before eventually claiming a memorable 5-1 success.
The home side were in irresistible form from the outset against the struggling Wanderers as they led by two before twelve minutes has elapsed. Henry Wilks scored first, opening the afternoon’s entertainment in the third minute, before Ollie Witrzens netted his sixth of the year just nine minutes later.
There was more to come before the interval as leading scorer Curtis Schaeffer added to the tally in the 25th minute with Cuneyt Caglar increasing the advantage to four three minutes later. When Riley Williams made it five by half-time the game was well and truly decided.
Wanderers rallied in the second-half and Baxter Donohoe netted a consolation goal, his fourth of the season and third in two games, before both teams were reduced to ten men by the conclusion with Schaeffer and Wanderers’ Seth Wright both dismissed after receiving a second yellow card.
In form striker Jack Gibson scored his tenth goal in the last seven CPL matches, and took his season total to a round dozen, as ANU FC scored twice in the second-half to defeat Canberra Juventus 2-0 at Ainslie Oval.
There was nothing to choose between the teams in the opening half as chances were few and the scoreboard remained unaltered as the two teams traded blows heading into the changing rooms with the deadlock in situ.
The opening goal was always likely to be critical, and it was the University side who managed it as Gibson, who simply can’t stop scoring at present, found the room to finally put ANU ahead. And, when Jacob Hart was able to add a second in the 79th minute, Juventus were finally broken, and ANU were able to claim the points to keep them in touch.
Belconnen United are still six points off the top of the table after they too won again, coming out on top in relative comfort as they thrashed bottom-of-the-table White Eagles 5-1 in a one-sided encounter that was played in difficult condition at Woden Park.
The fixture wasn’t as one-sided as the final scoreline indicated in the first-half, as the Blue Devils took until seven minutes before the break to open their account when midfielder David Reitstatter continued his excellent introduction to the CPL squad with a well-taken goal.
Within three minutes the visitors had scored again as Babin Paudyal doubled the lead and gave Belconnen a cushion to take into the break, something that had appeared unlikely just a few minutes beforehand. From there, there was no way back for the Eagles.
Reitstatter scored his second in the 67th minute, and Luke Vallone made it 4-0 with a quarter of an hour remaining. Reece Upton was able to pull one back for Eagles with ten to play, but their fate was sealed as Deakin Jewell, normally a goalkeeper, was released onto the pitch in place of Dustin Wells, and duly added the fifth late on.
