With six rounds of the Hyundai A-League (HAL) complete, the Westfield W-League (WWL) and the Foxtel Y-League (FYL) kicking off last weekend, it also marked the start of the season for our select ACT match officials.
Thomas Gellatly and Damon van Putten made their officiating debut in the FYL Round 1 match between Canberra United and Central Coast Mariners at McKellar Park on Sunday 17 November. Following their recent performances at the National Youth Championships for Boys, Gellatly (Assistant Referee 1) and van Putten (4th Official) will join Nathan Shakespear (Referee) who continues into his 3rd season on the FYL match official’s panel.
Nia Southwell returned to the WWL last weekend after missing last season due to the birth of her first child. Lauren Hargrave (Assistant Referee) and Georgia Ghirardello (4th Official) joined Nia as part of the officiating team for last weekend’s Canberra United and Perth Glory WWL match.
Earlier in the year, Ghirardello became Canberra’s first official to be the middle Referee for a WWL clash.
Ghirardello will take charge of this Sunday’s Canberra United clash against Melbourne City at McKellar Park with experienced Assistant Referees Southwell and Delfina Dimoski, who kicks off her 7th season as a WWL Assistant Referee.
Clive Mackillop will be responsible for overseeing the performances of all the FYL and WWL match officials over the next two weeks as he was re-selected to the National Assessors panel.
While our WWL and FYL match officials kicked off their season last weekend, Assistant Referees Owen Goldrick and Greg Taylor, and Assistant Video Assistant Referee (AVAR) Richard Naumovski, have made appearances in the HAL this season.
Taylor kicked off his 7th season as a HAL Assistant Referee at Bankwest Stadium in Round 2, while Goldrick has had appointments in Rounds 2 and 4. Goldrick will officiate his 3rd match of the season on Sunday 24 November, when the Central Coast Mariners take on Western United at Central Coast Stadium. Owen will be joined by Adam Powers, who will make his debut as a HAL Assistant Referee.
