Become a Football Referee


Follow these few simple steps and you will be on your way to becoming a Football Referee and Assistant Referee:

  1. Complete FA’s online Laws of the Game course
  2. Register for the Junior Match Official course package and complete the online modules
  3. Attend the in person event
  4. Register on PlayFootball in the Capital Football Referees club as a New Level 4 Referee
  5. Start Refereeing!

Junior Match Official (Level 4) QUALIFICATION

This course certifies anyone aged 13+ to referee full-field football matches. It is a great way to become involved or stay involved in community football as well as:

  • develop leadership skills;
  • improve self-confidence;
  • develop communication skills; and
  • earn from $35 per game!

Junior Match Official online component consists of four self-paced online modules. The in person event involves attending a 4 hour instructor-led session, providing you with the practical skills required of a Referee and Assistant Referee.

Before registering in the course, you must complete FA’s online Laws of the Game course. The online training module provides a basic introduction to the Laws of the Game and their interpretations which will prepare you for the Junior Match Official course.

Capital Football recommends that anyone aged 13 gains experience as a Game Leader for 1 year before deciding to undertake the Referee Level 4 course.

Female RL4 Course

Capital Football delivered 2 (two) RL4 courses exclusive to female participants in early 2023. Unlike the other scheduled courses, this course was be conducted face-2-face in a classroom.

There was no cost for this course, which included a ticket to an ALW Canberra United match immediately after the course.
