Men’s Futsal Premier League
Round 1
Canberra Olympic Superprawns started the defence of the men’s ACT Futsal Premier League crown with a convincing 5-0 hammering of Boomerangs FS Youth in Round 1 at the AIS Training Hall. The youngsters held out until the 13th minute of the match when Stephen Domenici opened the scoring but, despite a wealth of possession, the Superprawns were unable to extend their advantage in the first half.
Early in the second period the Champions went further ahead when Robbie Cattanach made it 2-0 and, from then on in, the Boomerangs Youth were chasing the game. The experience of the Olympic team was evident and they picked off their opponents on the counter-attack adding further goals from Goran Josifovski, Ryan Keir and Pat Ross-Magee to get off to a perfect start.
NC Untouchables Navy started their 2016 season with a victory as they saw off Boomerangs FS White 2-0 in a keenly contested match. There was nothing to separate the teams for the vast majority of the game until the dying embers when Michael Sydney found the back of the net. The Boomerangs White team went to fifth man in an attempt to level the scores but were hit in transition as Raymond Moon sealed the points.
Belconnen United got off to a winning start by coming out on top in a seven-goal thriller against Woden-Weston Timberwolves. Timberwolves opened the scoring in the 4th minute through Steven Zardo. Taylor Beaton equalised immediately via Taylor Beaton before the teams traded goals to make it 2-2 at the break. The Blue Devils kicked on in the second half as Jack Green and Dustin Wells netted with Wells bagging the winner straight after Ashley Blount made it 3-3.
In the other match of the opening round a tight match saw Boomerangs FS Blue sneak a 1-0 win over NC Untouchables Red. A goal from Brad Sawyer with seconds remaining proved the difference between two evenly matched teams.
