Wagga City Wanderers claimed a first victory of the Capital Premier League season as they secured a well-deserved 0-2 away victory over White Eagles at Woden Park on Saturday afternoon.
The visitors, who had claimed just one point from the opening fifteen on offer, were in front on only three minutes as Maxwell Prest opened the scoring with a fine finish to stun the Eagles.
And there was worse to come for the home supporters who saw Wanderers score again in the 21st minute via a goal from Kade Lyons. Remarkably, all eight goals from Wagga City have been scored by eight different players in the 2025 campaign.
At the top of the table Canberra Olympic recorded a fifth win from six this term to stay two points clear of Belconnen United after defeating Brindabella Blues 2-1 at Ipan Park thanks to a late match-winner.
Curtis Schaeffer had put the Blues ahead in the 63rd minute, but that goal was quickly cancelled out by a Zachary Milczarek equaliser. The game boiled over with fifteen minutes remaining as both sides were reduced to ten men, Nikola Barisic of Olympic and Daniel Munoz of Blues seeing red.
Olympic settled quicker with their ten men and a third goal of the season from midfield maestro Antoni Timotheou secured another valuable three points in the race for yeh league title.
Belconnen United kept up the pressure on Olympic as they stayed in touch with the league leaders following an impressive 5-1 away victory over Canberra Juventus at Ainslie Oval.
An own goal from Rakesh Gurung on twelve minutes, and strike from Michael Rinaudo six minutes later, had the Blue Devils two-up and cruising and, when Harry Billington made it 3-0 six minutes before half-time, they were home and dry.
Tom Cosentini pulled one back from the penalty sport before the break, but a second-half double from Jake Biship meant Belconnen was rarely troubled thereafter.
There were three penalties at Melrose Synthetic, two for the visitors, as ANU FC saw off West Canberra Wanderers 4-1 to remain third in the league table after six completed rounds.
Wanderers, who have only scored two goals this season, and both from penalties, are still rooted to the foot of the table and found themselves two behind close to the break as Jacob Hart opened the scoring and Jack Gibson netted from the spot.
Etha Stamatis scored a penalty of his own two minutes into stoppage time, only for Zac Chadwick to strike from the spot just past the sixty-minute mark. Monteagh Grace completed the scoring sixteen minutes from the full-time whistle.
