Belconnen United proved they were the cream of the crop in the Capital Premier League by winning the 2025 League Championship, doing so in some style as they romped to a 7-0 win over Wagga City Wanderers at McKellar Park.
The Blue Devils were insatiable in front of goal on a memorable evening for the McKellar Park faithful who were off their seats inside thirteen minutes as Jayde James-Ward opened the scoring.
More was to follow as Dustin wells made it two before half-time, bit it was a second-half powerhouse display that secured the points. Tupaia Ringi scored two, either side of goals from James-Ward and a first of the night for Jake Bishop.
Fittingly, it was the outstanding Bishop who wrapped it up, scoring the seventh in the 87th minute, his tenth league goal of the season, and top-spot for his team.
Earlier in the week, Brindabella Blues kept their mathematical hopes of making the top four alive and put any Belconnen United title celebrations on hold in midweek as the hoists claimed a 2-0 win at Ipan Park.
A Blue Devils win would have won the Capital Premier League title on the Wednesday evening, but as it was a goal from Curtis Schaeffer inside the opening half-an-hour, his sixteenth of the season, left the visitors playing catch-up.
And when Jonathan John made it 2-0 with fourteen minutes to go, any thoughts that Belconnen had of sealing the crown were done and dusted. The Blues thus entered the weekend six points behind Canberra Juventus, and hoping for a Juventus slip-up, but could still count themselves in the race.
That hope was dashed following the weekend’s results as Canberra Juventus earned the point that they needed to secure a top-four place with a hard-fought 1-1 stalemate away to ANU FC.
Juventus were forced to come from behind against the University side who were still chasing second-place on the table and gave themselves a chance to do so as they took the lead through a goal midway through the first-half from Tom Huizenga.
Juventus drew level in the 67th minute though as Patrick Shore scored his second goal of the season, and that proved enough for Juventus to edge the four points clear of the Blues they needed to secure an Elimination Final place.
Brindabella Blues did what they needed to do in order to keep Juventus honest as they claimed a narrow 1-0 away win over West Canberra Wanderers in a match that took place at Melrose Synthetic.
The only goal of the game was struck in the 65th minute as Blues leading scorer Curtis Schaeffer found a way past the Wanderers defence with his seventeenth goal of the season, one which keeps the forward in the hunt for the CPL Golden Boot.
Meanwhile, Canberra Olympic remained two points ahead of ANU FC in second place as they struck three goals in quick succession in the first-half to shake off the challenge of White Eagles in a 3-0 success at O’Connor Enclosed.
Luca Florez began the blitz by finding the back of the net in only the twelfth minute, putting the Eagles on the back foot.
A double within three minutes of each other from the in-form Julian Borgna made sure Olympic had the points in the bag before the break, the double from Borgna taking him to double figures for the 2025 campaign.
