National Premier League leaders Canberra Croatia will face a litmus test of their Hahn Australia Cup ambitions when they welcome recently crowned South Australian NPL Champions MetroStars to the national capital for a knockout tie under the floodlights at Deakin Stadium.
The perennial title challengers, who added a 20th Federation Cup/Australia Cup Qualifying title to their bulging trophy cabinet when they qualified for the main draw with a 2-1 extra-time win over Queanbeyan City at McKellar Park, face a tough obstacle to any progression into the last sixteen.
A 3-1 win over Modbury Jets on the weekend allowed MetroStars to clinch the SA NPL crown with three rounds remaining, a ten-point lead at the top of the table an insurmountable lead for their rivals to chase down with the remaining points available.
It was a title triumph built on a gritty defensive nous, the fifteen goals conceded to date the lowest in the league, and a free-scoring attack, their 45 goals in 19 games the best in the division. Sound familiar?
Canberra Croatia is built in much the same vein. In nineteen NPL games locally the red machine has blasted in 63 goals and conceded just eighteen, possessing three of the top four goalscorers in the race for the Golden Boot.
The men from Deakin Stadium have a glut of talent at the disposal in the front third. Indeed, their biggest headache might be which free-scoring striker they have to leave out of the starting line-up with the mercurial and talismanic Thomas James, the dynamic and hard-running Daniel Sparrow, the finishing power of Maxx Green, and 14-goal Golden Boot leader Nick Pratezina vying for the starting spots up top.
Pratezina comes into the match off the back of a game-winning hat-trick against O’Connor Knights in the NPL Round 16 clash at Hawker Football Centre on the weekend, whilst James brings twelve goals and eighteen assists in only fourteen matches.
Defensively, Croatia have recalled goalkeeper Sam Brown, who had moved to Sydney, and were delighted to welcome defensive colossus, the experience Matt Grbesa back into the fold to help marshal a young and committed back-line.
In the engine room, the nous of Ryan Keir and Daniel Colbertaldo, the latter the most experienced Australia Cup campaigner in the region having made seven appearances in the Cup over the years, are offset against the youthful energy of the Jadric brothers, Nikola and Marko, and Keegan Vucetic.
It’s a more than capable squad given its composition, but the juggernaut that is the Croatia trophy-winning side know that this is no ordinary test. The MetroStars bring a squad full of quality, confidence, and ability. The hosts will need to be at their best, and then some, to prevail and have the big-game knowledge to do so.
