An unforgettable end to Canberra Croatia’s 2026 NPL Men’s campaign culminated in the club winning this season’s league championship on the final day, following a 4-0 Round 22 victory over Belconnen United.
With over 20 minutes remaining against O’Connor Knights however, the title was seemingly out of their grasp, 4-3 down to their derby rivals, and just two weeks remaining in the regular season.
Enter Shandon Whitehead.
The fullback turned goalscoring extraordinaire came up with two goals past the 90, to turn a Knights lead into a memorable success that saw Dean Ugrinic’s side go three points clear heading into the penultimate round of the season.
A match-up with chasers Monaro Panthers beckoned in Round 21, who being three points behind Croatia and with a far superior goal difference, would go top heading into the final weekend of the season.
With the stakes already high, disaster struck mid-week for Croatia, when the club were deducted three points for fielding an ineligible team in a Round 19 success over Canberra Juventus.
Now level on points, fortune was not on the reigning league champions’ side, and having taken a two-goal lead in the first half, a sending off for Thomas James had them down to ten for the remaining half an hour.
The Panthers made the most of the man advantage, first grabbing a goal back through Lukman Ahmed-Shaibu, before as the clock ticked into additional time, Jonathan Olaoye equalised to send the Monaro home crowd into raptures.
Now level on points and clear on goal difference, the Panthers took top spot, and in a position where a win in Round 22 would all-but secure a first league championship since 1977.
One man was still yet to have his say however.
Less than a minute later, David Seselja had beaten his marker, fired a ball across the face of goal for a talismanic Whitehead at the back post, who fired the ball into the roof of the net to win the match for Croatia.
Deducted three points, down a man, the trophy slipping away, Ugrinic’s side again found a way through adversity, fueled by a winning mentality instilled by decades of domination in the top tier of ACT football.
A routine victory against Belconnen United at home the week after, capped off by three Whitehead goals, wrapped up an incredible end to the campaign, and a 27th league trophy for the club.
Despite the incredible end to the campaign, fans would have been understandably pessimistic looking ahead to this stage back in March, following Charity Shield defeat to Tigers and a Round 1 loss to Queanbeyan City.
What followed however, was 8 straight victories, 30 goals scored, and confidence firmly back amongst the squad, heading into an Australia Cup Qualifying Final.
A 5-1 defeat in the final to Tigers, was followed by a 1-1 draw in the league against the same opponents and a second loss of the season against Tuggeranong United, wrapped up a difficult period of 2026 for Ugrinic’s side.
With Croatia stumbling off the back of imperious form, the title race heading into the final weeks of the season was set up to perfectly.
What eventuated was one of the most thrilling ends to an NPL Men’s campaign in recent memory.
Fueled by a core group made up of Ryan Keir, Mathew Grbesa, Tony Spaseski, Daniel Colbertaldo, and Thomas James, Ugrinic had plenty of experience to call on in the pursuit for the league title.
With the goalscoring burden taken on by Shandon Whitehead, following his tally of 20 for the campaign, contributions from mid-season signing Mikey Katsoulis added plenty of goals and creativity from the wing.
Fullbacks Riley Zsuzsa and David Seselja were key contributors, particularly on the goals front with nine combined strikes in 2026.
Late-season pickup Nikola Ujdur made a significant impact in midfield alongside Nikola Jadric, while young goalkeepers Jampel Dorji and Andy Tsakalos rotated to add quality in the net for Croatia.
Having achieved a second-consecutive NPL Men’s title, Ugrinic expressed his satisfaction that the job was done.
“It’s a relief,” he said. “After all the drama that we’ve had in the last couple weeks, right now I’m finally just content, very pleased for the boys, very pleased for the club and now we can just relax, sit down and enjoy a drink.”
Having teetered on the brink of missing out on top spot, Croatia’s Head Coach was full of praise for his side’s determination to succeed in the face of adversity.
“It’s a testament to their resilience, it’s a testament to their will to win, they fight through to the last minute, they never see a situation that’s dire, they want to win, and they’ll keep fighting until the last minute and I can’t begin to tell you how proud I am of the lads,” Ugrinic commented.
One member of that squad has been transformed by the Head Coach into a clinical forward and has had the final say in Croatia’s title-deciding matches at the end of the 2026 campaign.
“Shandon Whitehead came across to us in the [Australian] Championship and had a fantastic [tournament] last year, he transferred over to us [and] I never saw him as a left back.” Ugrinic said. “I always thought hey, he might be a midfielder, and then we pushed him up front simply because we had injuries at the time halfway through the season and then that was where he felt comfortable.
“He has just been on a different stratosphere for the last five or six weeks, he’s just banging them in for fun.”
Having topped the table, the club are now confirmed as the Capital Football representative in the Australian Championship, a tournament which was always the key focus since their experience in 2025.
“Right from the outset that was the goal; To be the ACT representative in the Australian Championship, nothing else was on our radar,” Ugrinic said. “We’ve achieved what we set out to do, I just can’t begin to tell you just how pleased and happy we are for the club, the sponsors for our supporters, and the fact that we again are going to go and represent Canberra on the national stage.”
Elsewhere Tigers FC secured the league title on the final day in the NPL Men’s U23s, despite having the weekend off with a bye. Tom Crossley’s side all but wrapped up the crown with a 3-0 away win against challengers Belconnen United mid-week in Round 19, before beating Brindabella Blues 5-0 the week that followed. A far superior goal difference had the side comfortable that the Blue Devils would not be able to catch them last weekend, and despite a 6-0 success away to Croatia, Tigers came away with the title.
