Female Football Week returns to Canberra today as International Women’s Day marks the start of the 2017 iteration of the event.
Running through until the 16th of March, Female Football Week is an eight-day event celebrating Women’s football and the extensive impact that Women have on the game.
Capital Football CEO Phil Brown said that Female Football Week represented a great chance to promote Women in football through a number of different events.
“Female Football Week gives us a great opportunity to celebrate the impact that Women and Girls have on this sport, and help drive female participation in football.”
“The ACT has the highest ratio of female to male footballers nationally, so celebrating Female Football Week is very important to this region.”
The week will be marked by a number of events run by both Capital Football and clubs themselves.
Monaro Panthers will get things underway tonight with a Grassroots coaching course, before Canberra United’s girls only Miniroos coaching session takes place early next week.
Female Football Week comes to Canberra on the back of another successful Canberra United season, with the Westfield W-League’s most successful club claiming the Premier’s Plate for a record third time.
“Our Canberra United team and Referees officiating on the international stage are great role models and exemplify what can be achieved through football, both on and off the field” Brown said.
“The club and communities continued support of Canberra United and investment in women’s football helps to ensure a bright future for young girls aspiring to play, coach and referee football.”
Women play a significant role behind the scenes in football, comprising 50% of Capital Football’s staff positions, including United striker and Westfield W-League Golden Boot winner Ashleigh Sykes.
Add in the thousands of women and girls committing time on club committees, coaching, refereeing and volunteering and you can see just how important women in football are to providing opportunities for everyone engaged in the game.
