Yoogali SC have opened up a six-point lead at the top of the Capital Premier League following a vital 2-1 success away to Belconnen United at McKellar Park, despite playing over half-an-hour with ten men following the second-half dismissal of Isaac Donadel, dismissed after receiving a second yellow card.
The visitors had hit the front after seventeen minutes when Darren Bailey struck his ninth goal of the season to give Yoogali a narrow lead which they were able to hold onto into the half-time break.
Liam Rae, who has settled nicely into the Blue Devils line-up, levelled for the home team seven minutes after the resumption with his second goal since arriving at the club, and the momentum appeared to have shifted towards Belconnen after Isaac Donadel picked up a brace of yellow cards within seven minutes of each other.
That didn’t deter the league leaders though and they re-took the lead, with what proved to ultimately be the winner, when Bailey turned provider and created the opening for Reuben Donadel to strike home in the 66th minute and increase Yoogali hopes of promotion to the National Premier League.
Yoogali’s nearest challengers, Wagga City Wanderers, were forced to settle for a share of the spoils at Ipan Park in Calwell as Brindabella Blues earned themselves a 1-1 draw that left the home team four points off the race for the top four, and the finals places, and Wagga falling off the promotion pace.
Wagga looked like continuing their great season when Morris Kadzola scored from the penalty spot, his eleventh goal of the season, to edge the Wanderers ahead after thirty-five minutes of a tight contest.
The Blues hit back though and were all-square by the half-time break as Daniel Munoz struck two minutes into stoppage time to send the sides into the changing rooms level at 1-1. Neither team were able to add to their score in the second half, Blues ending the game a man down after Isaac Weekley was sent off.
A simply stunning goal from Nahuel Guerrero was enough to win the Derby match at High Street as Queanbeyan City defeated White Eagles 1-0. Guerrero struck from a mile out with a howitzer that cannoned into the net off the underside of the crossbar to win the game for City in front of a large crowd.
Guerrero, who had joined Queanbeyan in the transfer window, picked the right time to find the net, in a game in which chances were few and far between and in which the Eagles had started well and brightly.
After the interval, both teams had moments to add to the pressure, Niko Abot seeming most likely for City, but the home team had to hold on towards the end as the Eagles went searching for an equaliser but, try as they might, they could not force a way pass Nick Middleton and his irrepressible defensive unit.
The draw meant the White Eagles dropped to the bottom of the table as Canberra Juventus moved above them after earning their eighth point of the season from a creditable 1-1 draw away to ANU FC at Ainslie.
There was nothing to choose between the clubs in the first-half, the game heading into the second stanza goalless, however it wasn’t to stay that way for long as the University side went in front even minutes after the re-start as Rory Spiers found the target for the seventh time this campaign.
Juventus have certainly found their feet at this level though and got themselves back on terms within six minutes as flying forward Andre Jugovac scored a goal that lifted his team off the foot of the table.
