Brindabella Blues FC will seek to upset the applecart for the third weekend in succession when they meet Queanbeyan City in the Capital Premier League Grand Final at the Riverside Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Queanbeyan City finished the regular season in the top spot on the ladder and secured their place in the Gardn Final by defeating ANU FC 2-0 in the Qualification Final. The Brindabella Blues on the other hand had to battle it out each week throughout the finals to secure their spot from fourth.
With a 1-0 win after extra time against Belconnen United in week one of the finals, and 7-6 win on penalties against ANU FC just this past weekend, after levelling with the last kick of extra-time, the Blues have certainly displayed their ability to come out on top in a high-pressure match. In fact, they have only suffered one defeat in their last six CPL fixtures.
Queanbeyan City meanwhile have managed to reach the Grand Final whilst only securing one win in their last five matches played, that successful match being the week one finals result that led them straight into this upcoming weekend’s match. Although their work to secure the title had been done before this run.
Both teams have collected some impressive results this season. Queanbeyan’s biggest win of the year was their impressive Round 9 win over the West Canberra Wanderers with a score of 10-0. Nico Abot, Queanbeyan’s top scorer, also claims the top spot within the CPL overall with an impressive 27 goals this year.
The Blues best result of this season has been their 8-0 win over the Canberra White Eagles in Round 11. Curtis Schaeffer remains the top scorer from Brindabella with a total of ten goals this year.
Based on previous results of these two teams going head-to-head, it is almost certain that it will be a nailbiter. Since Round one of the 2023 competition, there has been four draws and one win each to Brindabella and Queanbeyan. Their results this year show a 3-3 draw in Round Five, and 1-1 draw in Round 11 and a 1-1 draw once again in Round 19.
Indeed, Queanbeyan are without a win against the Blues since the opening Round of the 2023 campaign.
This weekend’s match will be the ultimate tiebreaker between these two teams. With their history over the last two years coming out completely even, there can only be one winner on Sunday. And, as finals matches often prove, form goes out the window for the big day.
