Canberra FC and Gungahlin United will meet to contest the first piece of silverware for the 2019 season on Friday night, as the 2019 Charity Shield kicks off at Deakin Stadium.
All donations received on entry at the game will go towards The Salvation Army, and be put towards helping those who are less fortunate in the community.
After a long pre-season this serves as arguably the first ‘competitive’ hit out for these teams, and gives both Luka Ujdur and Marcial Munoz a chance to lay down a marker with their teams for the season.
Canberra FC are heading into this on the back of their treble winning season in 2018, and a win tonight can help set Ujdur and his squad on the way to bettering that season, at least in terms of silverware.
While some may forgive a coach for not going all out in a pre-season competition, both coaches affirmed their commitment on Thursday to laying down the challenge in this outing.
“Our goal is to make a statement to the league, and that statement is that anyone who comes here is going to have to work bloody hard to get anything,” Ujdur said on Thursday.
“In saying that, if you speak to a lot of the members who sit up here in the stand they’ll say that when a trophy is up for grabs there are no excuses, you go out to win it.”
Munoz shared a similar sentiment, reiterating his desire to begin the season with a bang.
“It is any teams dream to start with silverware at the beginning of the season,” he said.
“It sets you up for the rest of the season and we are no different, we are looking to set up on the right track.”
Both sides are believed to be at full strength for the outing, although both were tight-lipped on the topic of any injuries or niggles.
Kick-off at Deakin is at 6:30pm tonight, and the game will be streamed Live on BarTV Sports.
