Capital Football juniors were today part of a huge announcement in Canberra, with it today revealed the Commonwealth Bank Matildas will host New Zealand in Canberra on 12 April, 2022.
The game will be held at GIO Stadium as part of a two match international series, marking a long-awaited return of the women’s national team to Canberra after a nine year absence. The last time the Commonwealth Bank Matildas were in the nation’s capital saw a penalty shoot-out victory over New Zealand in the 2013 Centenary Cup.
A number of local Canberra players were invited to be part of the announcement, alongside current and former CommBank Matildas Chloe Logarzo, Ash Sykes and Grace Gill.
14-year old Sarah Brann from Belconnen United Football Club telling Capital Football “it’s such an honour to have the Matildas come here to Canberra, it’ll be really inspiring for all the young soccer players.
“I’ve been playing since I was four years old, being part of the Matildas in the future would be amazing.”
Canberra United and Commonwealth Bank Young Matildas (U20) defender agreed that it will be such an invaluable opportunity for young and inspiring footballers.
“I’ve been in their shoes and it’s obviously a long process to get there and I’ve still got a long way to go but every little step in your journey, so it’s exciting.
“Today, to see players and being able to stand beside them, Chloe [Logarzo], Ash [Sykes] and Grace [Gill], it’s great, I’m still pinching myself now.”
“It’s so exciting for Canberra, we obviously have a really great football community here, so we’re no doubt going to get behind the Matildas. Seeing your idols in the flesh, you can’t replace that feeling with anything else, it’s so inspiring.”
Tickets to the encounter will go on pre-sale for Football Account holders on Friday, 4 March 2022, with the General Public tickets window opening on Wednesday, 9 March 2022.
$1 (plus GST) from every ticket will be donated to the women’s CP national football program for female footballers with cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury or symptoms from stroke. Ticketing information is available from the official Commonwealth Bank Matildas website at www.matildas.com.au.
