The MSP aims to provide young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds (4 – 12 years old) the chance to engage in football within a positive and supportive environment. The program runs for 8-12 weeks, with 1-hour sessions held once a week. The focus of these sessions is to develop core football skills, including dribbling, passing, and teamwork, all while fostering social inclusion and community connection.
Through this program, we aim to provide newly arrived migrants with a platform to become involved in sport. We run the MSP in partnership with schools, councils, and NGOs across the ACT, ensuring it is available to those in areas with significant CALD populations. Once participants complete the program, we encourage and assist them in transitioning into local club football.
The MYP builds upon the foundation set by MSP, offering participants ages 12 – 20 years old an opportunity to step into leadership roles. Over 8 weeks, with 1-hour weekly sessions, the MYP focuses on developing young people not only as football players but as future coaches and referees. In addition to improving football skills, participants gain access to coaching certifications (MiniRoos coaching qualification) or basic referee licenses, paving the way for further involvement in the sport.
Both MSP and MYP are structured to be flexible and adaptable, with activities tailored to the developmental needs of each group. The core purpose of both programs is to offer opportunities for youth in low socioeconomic areas, targeting CALD communities who face barriers to participation in mainstream sport.
