Missed the Men’s National Premier League Round 11? Here’s your wrap-up!
IN A NUTSHELL
Gungahlin United roared to the top of the National Premier League table as they ruthlessly hammered Yoogali SC 9-0 at the AIS, rediscovering their scoring touch after going three matches without a goal. Canberra Croatia are back into title contention after winning the Croatian derby, Atiya Waraga bagging a hat-trick in the 4-2 win at O’Connor Enclosed, whilst Tigers FC battered previous leaders Monaro Panthers 4-0, Nikos Kalfas to the fore with a brace. And they were teenage dreaming at Kambah as Steve Nealon scored the only goal of the win over Canberra Olympic.
GOAL OF THE WEEK
There were so many great goals this week it was tough to pick a winner, yet we have plumped for the wonderful team goal struck by Canberra Croatia to 3-0 ahead of the Knights in the derby at O’Connor. Plenty of passes, great movement, a cheeky back-heel, and an acute pass to allow Atiya Waraga to tap home. Whilst Waraga’s third was a blunderbuss of a finish, this goal epitomised the team ethos.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
Again, there were a lot of superb performances on the weekend, Nikos Kalfas was ace for Tigers, the Gunners were immaculate as a team, and Nealon was a menace and got the winner for Tuggeranong, but for sheer impact on the outcome, and a tremendous third to complete his treble, a first at senior level, Atiya Waraga gets the nod for his derby day heroics.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
COMING SOON
Saturday sees a double-header on BarTV commentary with the Canberra Classico between Olympic and Croatia at O’Connor followed by Tuggeranong United’s short jaunt across the border to take on the Panthers. On Sunday, Tigers head interstate to visit Yoogali in Griffith, and current league leaders Gungahlin meet current League champions O’Connor Knights. Should be a quiet afternoon there then!
