Tuggeranong United moved two points closer to the summit of the Capital Premier League as they brushed aside Weston-Molonglo FC with an 8-0 hammering of the Magpies at Woden Park, increasing their goal difference to +31 in the process.
United had this one wrapped up by the half-time break, by which time they already led the bottom of the table Weston-Molonglo by half-a-dozen goals and could go top for the first time in 2022 should they gain a victory over White Eagles in the catch-up match due to be played this week.
Fast starts have been a feature of Tuggeranong matches this term and this game was no different as Sam Walker struck twice inside seventeen minutes and Harrison Buesnel scored his fourth league goal of the season in the 23rd as United seized command.
Ben Anderson and Dylan Berkrey added to the tally and there was still time for Luke Stevens to net the first of his brace in stoppage time as the beleaguered Magpies struggled to get near their opponents. Adam Firych and Stevens completed the rout in the second half.
Queanbeyan City left it late to earn a point with a goal five minutes from time earning the league leaders a 1-1 draw with Brindabella Blues at their High Street home ground.
It was the second time in a fortnight that City were held in their pursuit of promotion and potentially opened the door for Tuggeranong United who play their catch-up match on Tuesday evening against White Eagles.
Jamie Ward had earlier given the Blues the lead ten minutes into the second half as Ray Junna’s team caused problems for City yet again. But David Ramos proved his worth as the former Guatemalan youth international equalised late on.
Cuneyt Caglar netted his second hat-trick of the Capital Premier League season as ANU FC put on a late show themselves, scoring five times in the last seventeen minutes to swamp Wagga City Wanderers 8-0.
Caglar’s treble came in the space of those seventeen minutes and added to first-half goals from Zac Lawrence and Mitch Steenburgen as Eagles started brightly at Hawker Football Centre, Woden Park being deemed unplayable that morning.
Lawrence added a second after the break to make it three and seal the points before the avalanche of goals. Ed McCarthy and Lee Hynes were the other goalscorers as Eagles moved to third and handily increased their goal difference into the bargain.
Yoogali SC recorded a vital win to bring themselves back into top four contention as they came from behind to inflict a damaging defeat on ANU FC, the fourth loss of the campaign for the University side who are slipping off the pace of the leading pair in the race for promotion.
Hassan Alnuwaysir put the visitors ahead in the third minute, a dream start for ANU FC, but Yoogali appear to be rediscovering their form and the inspirational Joe Preece was able to bring the Griffith club level before the interval.
Yoogali were soon signing to the tune of Jack Moon in the second half as the Yoogali man made his mark, putting his team ahead in the 58th minute before settling the fixture with the third with twenty minutes to go.
The brace from Moon had ANU spinning like the decks on his DJ gear with the goal that made it 3-1 and it remains to be seen whether it will prove to be a pivotal moment in the campaign for both these teams.
