Canberra Olympic moved into second place on the National Premier League Reserves competition as they netted a last-gasp penalty to earn a 2-2 draw against Gungahlin United at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval on Friday evening.
Brittany Fiorese rescued a point for the visitors with what was the last kick of the match to gain a draw, and prevent a second loss of the season, whilst for the Gunners it was a fifth point of the campaign.
Gungahlin started in explosive fashion and were two goals to the good before the eighteen-minute marl. Ella Hall fired the hosts ahead after three minutes, before Josephine McKenzie finished off a slick move to steer in the second goal in the seventeenth minute.
It took Olympic until thirteen minutes from time to respond, Sienna Ness confidently netting her fourth goal of the season, and that set up the dramatic conclusion where Fiorese kept her cool from the penalty spot to send the goalkeeper the wrong way and ensure parity.
Belconnen United increased their lead at the top of the table on Sunday with a comfortable 9-1 win over Tuggeranong United at McKellar Park with two players helping themselves to hat-tricks.
Both Emily Tozer and Scarlett Wells claimed a treble, but it was Tuggeranong who would take the lead as Lauren Watt struck inside the opening two minutes of the encounter.
It didn’t take the Blue Devils long to respond, Tozer levelling within a minute, and the same player had a hat-trick by the 31st minute, the third coming after Wells had opened her account sixty seconds before.
Wells added a brace after the break, either side of a goal from Daniela Eskinja, whilst Sienna D’Ambrosio and Elfin Mokany were able to add to the scoreboard in the final six minutes.
West Canberra Wanderers squeezed past Majura FC at Melrose Synthetic, claiming all three points after a nervy 3-2 win, the visiting team managing to score their first goals of the season.
Evdoxia Mantinaos struck her third goal of the season to open the scoring in the sixth minute, and when Sophie Couldrick made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute, it appeared to be a straightforward Wanderers victory.
But Majura hit back. Vanessa Sophcoli and Isabella Pole both scored before half-time to send the teams into the changing rooms level, however Wanderers were to win the game in the second-half as Couldrick struck with twenty-five minutes left to edge the match.
