Round 10 of the National Premier League Women’s got underway at O’Connor Enclosed as Canberra Olympic made it two wins in two with an 8-0 hammering of Tuggeranong United.
Just as Belconnen United did a week ago, Olympic went ahead inside the opening minute of the contest, as Ella Brown had an empty net to tap into, having been set up by a driving run from Tianah Miro.
Just four minutes later, it was already 3-0, as Tatum Mazis proved too much for the Tuggeranong defence to handle, bagging two well-taken goals in two minutes, both put on a plate again by the eye-catching Miro.
The midfielder was involved in everything good for Frank Cachia’s team, extending her influence on the contest further by winning a penalty on 14 minutes, which Ella Brown put away confidently, before adding her name to the scoresheet in the latter part of the second half, to round the total to six for Olympic, with the addition of a late Casey Smith own goal.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with the home side continuing to dominate and put goals away, as Alyse Jensen emphatically put away a seventh, before Mazis completed her hat-trick with 16 minutes remaining, again finishing confidently after being set-up by substitute Tia Burridge.
Over at Deakin Stadium the headline clash of the afternoon saw Belconnen United edge past Canberra Croatia with a 2-1 victory away from home.
The Blue Devils began in confident spirits and took the lead early on, as Keira Bobbin clinically finished their first clear chance of the game, having been supplied by an inch-perfect pass from Alina Roberts.
Roberts soon got herself on the scoresheet having set up the first, capping off a dominant first half display from Scott Conlon’s team 21 minutes later, by smashing the ball past Ellie Summers in the Croatia net, after an inventive set-up from Alyssa Di-Campli from the other side of the field.
With a 2-0 scoreline a fair representative of a somewhat one-sided first half, Musie Elongo’s outfit came out much improved in the second period, and although the Blue Devils continued to create chances, Croatia’s attacking output grew more prominent, however the home team couldn’t seem to manifest any clear-cut opportunities.
Having made the mid-season move to Croatia after spending years at Belconnen, the script was written for Reilly Yuen to bag against her former club, and although a late red card for Hannah Bourke had essentially wrapped up the three points, her late strike was a just reward for the home side’s second half display.
The final match of the round saw Gungahlin United reclaim their place in the top four with a 3-0 away victory against Majura FC at Ainslie Field 2.
The Gunners would have no doubt been hungry to make up for a disappointing defeat against Olympic in the previous round, and it showed in a dominant first half, in which a 28th minute Bonnie Young stunner put them 1-0 ahead.
Despite plenty of opportunities Marcial Munoz’s team took a slim advantage into the break, and quickly doubled it in the second half as Annaliese Grove found Ginger Oliver in the penalty area, who finished with one touch to make it 2-0.
Just three minutes later the game was killed off, as Bonnie Young reached double figures for goals in the NPLW with a second of the afternoon, cutting inside on her right foot and striking past Grace New into the top of the net, to ensure an important three points were heading the way of the Gunners.
