Tigers FC fell to a 2-0 defeat last Wednesday in the Hahn Australia Cup Round of 32 at McKellar Park, following two clinical Western Sydney Wanderers strikes in the later stages of the second half.
Miguel Di Pizio’s 67th-minute goal was succeeded by a Brandon Borrello strike just four minutes later, in a result that saw Ufuk Talay off to the perfect start in his first competitive match in charge of the Wanderers.
The 2014 Asian Champions League winners arrived in the capital following a bottom-placed finish in 2025/26 to face a Tigers side seeking a maiden Australia Cup victory, in their first Round of 32 fixture for five years.
The visitors immediately took command of the match, dominating possession from the kickoff, however Ali Efe’s side proved to be a difficult unit to break down, putting in a number of crucial interceptions and blocks to see off attacking waves from Western Sydney.
Having survived two close Brandon Borrello chances in the opening half an hour, Tigers received another scare ten minutes before the break, as Borrello was found again in the penalty area, however the Socceroo could only find the woodwork from close range.
A dogged first half display from goalkeeper Willem Lejeune and his defensive unit saw the home side go into the break holding their opponents to a goalless scoreline.
It took until the 67th minute for the Wanderers to firmly click into gear, as a turnover in possession presented the ball to Angus Thurgate, before Borrello’s backheel fell to a goal-hungry Di Pizio, who put his side into the lead with a first goal in Wanderers colours.
The number 10’s opener unlocked Tigers, and following two half-chances for Talay’s side, Borrello grabbed his deserved goal, finishing from close range after lovely link-up play between Canberra’s own Atiya Waraga, and new signing Panashe Madanha.
Tigers’ response was swift however, as substitute Josh Milicevic forced Tristan Vidackovic into a save almost a minute later following a well-struck effort from the edge of the box.
Moments later a back pass from Alex Gersbach almost picked out Milicevic in the area, who did enough to charge down Vidackovic’s clearance and force the ball sailing over the Wanderers goal.
Ten minutes before the conclusion it was Western Sydney who ended on top, capped off by a low-driven effort from a lively Atiya Waraga on the edge of the area, however the shot flashed wide of Lejeune’s near post.
A two-goal scoreline was enough in the end for the Red and Blacks, who turned up in fine form in their first competitive outing of the 2026/27 campaign, leaving a defensively resilient Tigers FC side unable to find the same level of quality in the final third.
