Top meets bottom to start Round 4 of the Women’s Capital Futsal League with West Canberra Lightning lining up against Queanbeyan-Palerang Power to kick-start the action at Daramalan College.
Lightning have the best defensive record in the competition and will be eyeing off the possibility of three more points against a team with has the worst defensive record, the Power having conceded 47 to the Lightning’s meagre three.
The Power have been improving week-by-week and the introduction of Sally Kiss into their line-up has injected some extra quality that was noticeable in their Round 2 game against the UC Stars. Her link-up with Maia Cameron, who played for the Young Matildas in their internal match on Sunday at Seiffert Oval, was invigorating.
Lightning managed to come out on top in their eagerly anticipated match with the Fire and will be determined to continue their 100% record.
North Canberra Fire suffered their first loss of the season in that match with the Lightning, and will be out to get back into the groove when they take the pitch against the ANU Apex on Saturday evening.
Having dropped five points off the leading Lightning with the narrow loss, it’s imperative for the Fire to return to the winners circle if they are to remain in contention to claim the number one place on the league table. The Apex however will certainly have other ideas and will make life hard.
A week off, courtesy of their match with South Canberra Swift being postponed, may have helped the Apex in giving them more time on the training pitch to hone their skills and their quality. This match will be a big test for them as to where they stand.
The round concludes on Sunday as UC Stars meet the Swift in what has the potential to be the fixture of the round in the Women’s competition. Both have shown in patches what they are capable of in the CFL, and both will feel they can come away with the maximum return.
Swift have a game in hand on those above them and will see a positive return against the Lightning as a chance to reel in the teams in the top two and help to cement themselves into the top four
Stars though have shown they can mix it with the best. A blend of youth and experience has been great to watch and this match should be one not to be missed, with two squads containing plenty of skilful and energetic performers.
