A total of 54 teams and over 1,000 players and officials from Football Australia’s nine State and Territory Member Federations will meet in Melbourne and Wollongong in July with the eyes of scouts and National Team Selectors watching closely.
The National Youth Championships has long been an integral part of the Football Australia’s talent identification program, proving an important stepping-stone for many current CommBank Matildas and Subway Socceroos.
Back for a second year, Football Australia’s Invitational XI program will return to the tournament to compete in the Under 15 Girls and Under 16 Boys age groups. Listed as the Invitational XI, the program aims to expand our Talent Identification opportunities, creating a chance for aspiring and emerging First Nations Footballers to shine on the national stage.
The Under 15 Girls age group will feature twelve (12) teams while the Under 16 Girls age group will feature ten (10) teams. Both age groups will run concurrently from 3 – 8 July at the Home of the Matildas at La Trobe University in Melbourne.
In the Under 15 Girls age group, teams will be split into three pools to contest the group stage. The top three teams from group A and B and the top two teams from Group C will then advance to the final stages, progressing through the Quarter Finals and Semi Finals, with the Grand Final to be held on Sunday, 8 July.
In the Under 16 Girls age group, teams will be split into two pools to contest the group stage. The top team from group A and B will advance straight to the Semi Finals with the second and third ranked teams from each pool contesting the Qualifying Finals, with the Grand Final to be held on Sunday, 8 July.
Both the Under 15 Boys and Under 16 Boys age groups will involve sixteen (16) teams and will run concurrently from 16 – 21 July, utilising the quality sporting facilities of WIN Stadium, JJ Kelly Park and Ian McLennan Park in Wollongong.
The Under 15 and Under 16 boys age groups will see a four-group system being employed. The top two teams from each group will advance to the final stages, progressing through the Quarter Finals and Semi Finals with the Grand Final to be held on Sunday, 21 July.
While the highly competitive matches featuring potential future stars are the highlight of the National Youth Championships, the tournament also provides an amazing opportunity for coaches and officials.
Member Federation coaches will have access to coach education sessions, while the Member Federation nominated match officials who precede over matches will have access to education sessions and are also presented with a chance to showcase their skills.
All coaches and match officials will also be provided with development opportunities through leadership and well-being sessions led by Football Australia’s Technical and High Performance Departments.
Football Australia would like to acknowledge the ongoing support of the Victorian Government, through its major events agency Visit Victoria, and the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW along with Destination Wollongong.
Additionally, Football Australia recently announced a broadcast arrangement with News Corp Australia’s streaming platform KommunityTV, which will see every game of the National Youth Championships 2024 streamed live across Australia.
