Men’s Futsal Premier League – Round 1
It was a high scoring first round of the Men’s Futsal Premier League with 28 goals across the four matches, including 14 in one clash as the Superprawns thrashed new boys O’Connor Knights.
Boomerangs FS White 2 (Giorgi 12′, Smith 40′) def. NCU Navy 1 (De Vries 18′)
Anthony Giorgi gave Boomerangs the lead just 12 minutes into the match as he pounced on a defensive error, but Ryan De Vries levelled proceedings with two minutes left in the first half. Both teams continued to attack in the second half, pushing forward heavily, but it was Boomerangs who stole the points at the end as Chris Smith stole the ball before firing into the top corner.
NCU Red 4 (Falusi 2′, 27′, Taylor 5′, Rolfe 9′) def. Boomerangs FS Blue 3 (Sawyer 25′, Porjo 35′, Smith 38′)
A seven-goal thriller saw North Canberra Untouchables get over Boomerangs Blue by a single goal despite a late comeback from Blue. Early goals to Connor Falusi, Brant Taylor and Ben Rolfe saw NCU jump out to an early lead at half-time. Brad Sawyer pulled a goal back for Boomerangs five minutes into the second half but NCU pushed the lead back to three moments later. A late flurry from Boomerangs was not enough though as NCU held on for the win.
HNK O’Connor Knights 2 (Dodd 31′, Hawker 39′) def. by Canberra Olympic Superprawns 12 (Habtemariam 2′, Flanigan 10′, 39′, Own Goal 18′, Domenici 19′, Josifovski 20′, 24′, 40′, Fulton 32′, 36′, Ross-Magee 29′, 38′)
O’Connor Knights received a rough welcome to the FPL as they were on the end of a 10-goal beating from the Canberra Olympic Superprawns. The Superprawns flew out of the blocks and never looked back, cruising to a five-goal lead at the break. The reigning Champions did not let up in the second half as they put on a seven gaul blitz, with O’Connor finding the back of the net twice in the final ten minutes.
Boomerangs FS Blue 2 (O’Gorman 8′, 40′) drew. Timberwolves FC 2 (Denne 22′, Carters 29′)
The only draw of Round 1 came in the final match, as a late goal from Boomerangs Blue grabbed a share of the points against Timberwolves. John O’Gorman gave Boomerangs an early one goal lead that they took into the break, before the Timberwolves hit back twice in ten minutes to take the lead. But O’Gorman grabbed his second goal in the final minute to ensure a share of the points.
