Jamie Larsen put in a Player of the Match performance as Woden Valley secured a 3-0 over Gungahlin United in Round 3 of the Canberra Powerchair League.
The result didn’t do justice to Gungahlin who had a lot of opportunities to score in the first half with all players given chances in what was a very close match. Gunners sent in attacks from all angles but just couldn’t find a way through.
Woden Valley’s defence held strong, led by Larsen, Rob Oakley, and Brandon Stroud which meant that the scores were level at 0-0 going into the half-time break.
The second half saw things open with Woden Valley capitalising. Cooper Hadley showed lots of improvement, going close to scoring on numerous occasions, putting Gungahlin United under some pressure.
For the first few minutes of the second half, it was very even, then when everyone thought a breakthrough might not arrive a pass went to Stroud who found a gap and put it in the goal to break the deadlock.
The second goal came from an unfortunate goal kick taken by Gunners’ ‘keeper Michael Foster who lined up his hit but sent it straight into Stroud, who was in the right position to intercept and deflect the ball back at Gungahlin’s goal.
Then a few minutes later Woden were on the attack with Rob Oakley who spun around on the spot and ended up beating the goalkeeper to make the score 3-0. For the rest of the match, it was up and down with Gungahlin unlucky not to score.
Upon reflection of the game, Woden Valley’s Brandon Stroud commented on how Woden Valley and Gungahlin performed in the third fixture.
“That was quite an interesting game. I thought Gungahlin played quite well and were unlucky not to score on multiple occasions,” Stroud admitted.
“Both teams communicated very well throughout the match. I also thought that Woden did really well in defence today due to great communication between one another.
“I reckon that when we go back to Sydney again for our next competition next year that Canberra United will put up a fight as we are improving every week”.
Round 4 of the Canberra Powerchair League takes place at the Hockey Centre, Lyneham on Saturday 3 September at 11.30am.
