Capital Football recently upgraded the floodlights at Hawker Football Centre, increasing the LUX capacity to 200 through an ACT Government Grant. Capital Football contracted an external company, Affinity Electrical, to undertake the works which were completed on Monday 29 April.
Hawker Football Centre is the traditional home of football in Canberra, having hosted many major events and matches over the years, being upgraded from Grass to a synthetic surface to enable greater usage in 2009.
ACT Minister of Sport, Mr Andrew Barr, officially opened the redeveloped Hawker Football Centre on Friday, 31 July 2009. The natural playing field was replaced with TigerTurf Soccer Real, an international standard synthetic surface.
The first official fixture was hosted was the National Premier League match between Canberra City and Belconnen United.
The surface was rejuvenated in May 2018 when Sports Clean brushed and vacuumed the surface, standing synthetic fibres, helping to improve drainage of the surface, and allowing for rubber to settle when it was laid.
Over the years the lights have been an issue for game play, potentially creating a hazard for participants, and therefore were in great need of an upgrade to bring them into line with modern requirements.
Capital Football would like to go on record thanking the ACT Government for the release of the funds via the grant to enable this important upgrade to take place, which will enable the Federation to allow a greater level of participation as a result of the lights being improved.
The upgrade of the lights also enables Capital Football to apply remote control of the venue, whereby the lights can be automatically planned to turn on and off at different times and gives us three different lighting options including match play, training, and security.
