From the first time she laced up her boots at Woden Valley as a six-year-old, Emmalea Kalenjuk’s connection to football was instant.
Fast forward over a decade, and she now plays for Canberra Croatia’s U17s women’s side, carving her path in the game with a mixture of passion, grit, and purpose. Her story, though still in its early stages, is one of growth, self-belief, and chasing something bigger than just results on the field.
A standout memory from Emmalea’s journey came during her early high school years a turning point that lit the fire inside.
“I was in Year 10 when I got selected to play in a first-grade women’s side,” she recalls. “That was the moment I realised this isn’t just something I enjoy it’s something I love and want to keep pushing in.”
That feeling of being pushed, yet belonging, shaped her desire to progress in the sport. Her playing style is driven by the thrill of the game’s physical and mental demands. “What drew me in was the interaction of speed, control and determination,” she explains. “Every match is a challenge. I love that.”
As much as football is a team sport, Emmalea’s relationship with the game is deeply personal. It is a space where she feels herself fully, where emotion meets strategy. On game day, nerves, and excitement bubble over, but she’s found ways to harness the chaos, and, despite the intensity, Emmalea finds joy in the simpler moments especially the ones shared with teammates.
“To be honest, the first thing going through my head is usually profanities,” she laughs. “But then I breathe. I’ve learned to use relaxation techniques. I block everything out and focus. Once that whistle blows, it’s just me and the ball.
“My favourite part of a match is when you score and your whole team rallies around you. That moment of camaraderie is special. It’s not just the goal it’s the shared feeling of we did this together.”
Preparation plays a key role in Emmalea’s matchday routine. Her mornings begin with light technical work simple touches and drills to build rhythm and then a cold shower to snap into focus.
“It helps reset my body and clear my mind,” she says. “Once I’ve done that, I can go into the game feeling ready. Not just physically but mentally too.”
On and off the field, Emmalea’s growth is steady and grounded. While she continues to improve as a player, she’s also becoming a leader within her team, a voice of support and positivity. When asked what advice she’d give to younger players starting their journey, her answer reflects the emotional intelligence that sets her apart.
“Focus on where you feel flawed and work on that. Everyone has weaknesses. When you take the time to improve, you start to play with confidence. That is when the game becomes fun.”
As for what she hopes to see in the future of women’s football, Emmalea’s dream is bold and inspiring.
“I want to see the female version of Messi. Someone who transcends the game, inspires generations, and shows that women’s football can be just as magical. I think it’s coming, I want to be part of that movement.”
For now, Emmalea continues to develop her game with Canberra Croatia, driven by both individual ambition and the joy of playing in a tight-knit team. Whether it’s nailing a perfect first touch, scoring a goal, or pushing through a tough session, she brings heart into everything she does.
In a sport where self-belief and resilience can carry players far, Emmalea Kalenjuk is already showing she has both in spades. While she may be years away from reaching her peak, one thing is clear her journey is only just beginning.
