Capital Football’s Women’s All-Stars side secured a hard-fought win on penalties in tough Newcastle conditions last Saturday 10 October against the Northern NSW All-Stars.
A goalless scoreline after a high-level 90 minutes of football took the match to a shootout.
With plenty of quality takers and an inspired Matilde Laurel-Tighe in between the posts our All-Stars got the job done.
The match started in baking conditions at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility, and remained that way throughout much of the match.
Capital Football started the match brightly, with both wingers Alina Roberts and Tianah Miro creating several opportunities for themself, Miro coming the closest with a long-distance effort that sailed over the net.
With the first 45 ending all square, and with Scott Conlon and Victor Yanes’ side perhaps shading the possession, Northern NSW had the better of the second 45, with substitute Laurel-Tighe called into action on several occasions to keep the scores level.
Capital Football had their chances towards the end of the match, none closer than a Jamie Berkeley free-kick that found the crossbar, and a late one-on-one chance for Anneke Corry which was blocked by NNSWF custodian Olivia Sneddon.
With both sides unable to find a goal, penalties beckoned.
Following Elodie Dagg’s penalty for the hosts opening the scoring, Ginger Oliver bagged in response to tie up the shootout at one-a-piece.
It was Laurel-Tighe’s moment next, diving low to her right to deny Sophie Nenadovic, and paving the way for a cool Jamie Berkeley to put Capital Football up 2-1.
The goalkeeper wasn’t done yet, again reading the penalty from NNSWF, this time denying Ceanna Frost from 11 metres to make it two-straight saves.
Another penalty-specialist in Ivy Stevens was up next, slotting past Sneddon to make it 3-1.
Once Tahlia Gossner had converted for NNSWF, the stage was set for Anneke Corry, who converted another confident penalty to secure the All-Stars Challenge for Capital Football.
