Hat-Tricks from Briana Maguire and Edith Fordyce Croker helped ANU Apex finish the season on a high as they defeated Queanbeyan-Palerang Power 7-3 in their catch-up match at Radford College on Monday evening.
The Apex secured a second win of the season, but were made to work hard for it, having to come from 1-0 and 2-1 behind to claim the victory, after Zoe Wilson netted twice either side of Maguire’s opening goal of the evening.
Maguire turned the match around by adding two more goals in rapid-fire succession just prior to the half-time interval, leaving Apex with a 3-1 cushion at the break, and they never looked back from there, extending their advantage through a Grace Davey goal with eleven minutes to play.
Fordyce-Croker got in on the act with a four-minute treble of her own late on to take Apex away from any imminent danger, but the final word of the night went to outstanding Power goalkeeper Maja Dodt, who took a break from making sensational saves, to score her first ever CFL goal.
Brittany Palombi took her season total to forty goals as West Canberra Lightning ended the regular season with another thumping win over Queanbeyan-Palerang Power as the Golden Boot winner netted nine times in a one-sided performance at Radford College on Wednesday evening.
Lightning, who back up for their semi-final on Friday evening against South Canberra Swift, were in the goal mood once more as they led 11-0 at the interval, before going on to add a further ten after the break against a Power team which battled gainfully with only five players throughout.
Palombi, who opened the scoring in the first minute, had five by half-time, and was joined on the scoresheet by Jamie Berkeley who struck a magnificent seven, moving her onto 25 goals for the season.
Krista Hagen bagged herself a first-half double, whilst Dianne Wilson ended the match with a hat-trick courtesy of two late goals to add to her strike on the cusp of half-time and thus the scoring in both halves.
