CAPITAL LEAGUE
MATCHDAY 15
Saturday 23rd July 2016
ANU FC will be primed to go again this week as they aim to complete their chase of the Capital League title. Having been stumped by White Eagles on Matchday 14, the University side still hold pole position and the trophy will be theirs if they defeat Canberra Olympic at Kaleen Enclosed on Saturday afternoon. Olympic however will be no pushovers, chasing a top four spot themselves and in danger of being caught by Weston-Molonglo FC should they be defeated here.
Weston-Molonglo FC will be looking to close in on a finals spot with a win over Narrabundah at Waramanga with a victory, coupled with an Olympic loss, bringing them level on points with the team above them. The Bulls scored their third win of the season in their last outing and are often a handful, so the Magpies will need to be on their game if they are to get the positive result they need.
White Eagles meanwhile continue what appears to be a vain hope of cutting into ANU’s championship celebrations. The Eagles are primed for finals football, as always, and their 3-1 win over ANU FC, inflicting a first defeat of the season on the Students, is proof that they have what it takes to upset the apple-cart in the finals. The league championship might be out of their hands but a win over bottom of the table Tuggeranong United at Woden Park would be a welcome momentum builder.
Queanbeyan City meanwhile still harbour hopes of a second place finish and must continue to rack up the points, lest they slip away from the top four picture with Olympic and Weston-Molonglo FC lurking. City will be favoured to claim the win over O’Connor K nights at the Riverside Stadium, but the Knights will be stubborn opposition and there is no guarantee of a home success.
