Capital Football is proud to introduce the Pink Armband Initiative, reinforcing our commitment to creating a safe, respectful and supportive environment for young people involved in football.
Effective immediately, referees under the age of 18 will wear a pink armband while officiating matches across the Capital Football community. The armband serves as a clear and visible reminder to all participants, coaches, officials and spectators that the referee is a young person developing their skills and contributing to the game.
The introduction of the Pink Armband Initiative aligns with similar programs implemented throughout Australia, including Football Queensland’s Pink Armband program, Football South Australia’s Bright Orange Armband initiative, and practices adopted by Football South Coast, Central Coast Football and Nepean Football. Comparable programs have also been embraced across other sports, including Basketball Victoria and Basketball South Australia through the Green Whistle initiative.
The initiative forms part of Capital Football’s broader commitment to safeguarding young people and promoting positive behaviours on and around the field. By clearly identifying junior referees, the program aims to reinforce expectations of respect and support from players, coaches, officials and spectators.
Benefits of the Pink Armband Initiative include:
• Strengthening protections for young referees through clear policy-backed support
• Helping deter abuse, intimidation and inappropriate behaviour directed at match officials
• Reinforcing high standards of conduct for participants and spectators
• Promoting respectful attitudes towards young referees as they develop their skills
• Supporting referee confidence, retention and development through a safer match-day environment
Young referees play a vital role in our game and deserve to feel safe, respected and supported every time they step onto the field. The Pink Armband Initiative serves as a visible reminder that many of our match officials are young people learning their craft, and that everyone involved in football has a responsibility to help create a positive environment for their development.
Capital Football encourages all players, coaches, team officials, parents and supporters to support the Pink Armband Initiative.
The pink armband is more than an identifier – it is a reminder. When you see a referee wearing a pink armband, recognise that you are interacting with a young person who is learning, developing and contributing to our game.
Before reacting to a decision, remember that the person in the middle is someone’s son, daughter, brother, sister, grandchild or friend. Consider whether your words and behaviour reflect the respect and understanding you would want shown to a young person in your own family.
By choosing respect over criticism and support over abuse, we can create an environment where young referees feel safe, confident and valued.
There is no game without referees – and our young referees deserve the best possible experience.
