It is somewhat fitting that the new season of Capital Football’s Youth competitions should kickstart with a pair of Charity Shield encounters featuring a team that has just been promoted to the highest echelon of the local game.
That’s because the Girls match will see Majura FC in action, their senior female team have been chosen to become the eighth team in the National Premier League Women’s competition for 2025. And it will be a welcome return for Majura onto centre-stage as they face a re-match of their 2024 NPL Girls U17 Grand Final against Belconnen United.
The two teams were the standouts in the league last season and gave the watching crowd at South Jerrabomberra quite the spectacle on Grand Final day trading two late goals as the match ended 1-1 before Majura, inspired by a Player of the Match performance from goalkeeper Ingrid Laursen, narrowly prevailed in a nail-biting penalty shoot-out.
Meanwhile, the Boy’s under-18 Shield match will see the return of both Canberra Croatia and Canberra Olympic to the big stage, the clubs having fought out a tight and memorable Grand Final that was decided in Olympic’s favour by the only goal scored six minutes past the hour mark.
Olympic’s Vanna McAlister was named as Player of the Match in a tremendous advertisement for Youth football. Both Charity Shield matches will be streamed live on the Capital Football YouTube channel.
