IN A NUTSHELL
Blue Devils unbeaten run came to an end as Gunners emerged with a 2-1 success at Gungahlin Enclosed. Olympic netted five away to Croatia at Deakin Stadium, the hosts managing two in response, and Olivia Hicks bagged a double as West Canberra Wanderers defeated ANU WFC 3-1 at Hawker.
GOAL OF THE WEEK
A long-range blockbuster from Gungahlin United defender Alexandra Nealand takes the chocolate this week, the roaming full-back on hand to collect from a corner and unleash an unstoppable shot that arced over the head of Monique Pinkiewicz in the Belconnen United goal as the Gunners ended the Blue Devils unbeaten start to the 2024 NPL season.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
You expect big players to show up in big games. Madelyn Whittall has not been back long enough to be in peak form after her season with Canberra United, but on Sunday at Deakin Stadium, she showed how much she can bring to this Olympic team. Two goals, a superb assist, involved in a fourth, Whittall was a constant problem for the Canberra Croatia defence, and her usual selfless hard worker to help her team secure a prestigious success.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
COMING SOON
It’s a week of this weekend in the NPL as there’s a cup to be won at Deakin, but when we return there’s a trio of intriguing matches. Croatia head to Melrose Synthetic and an early afternoon match-up with West Canberra Wanderers. The Gunners are on the road to fac ANU WFC at Hawker Football Centre, whilst Olympic also travel. They’re down South to face Tuggeranong at Kambah.
