Missed the Women’s National Premier League Round 8? Here’s your wrap-up!
IN A NUTSHELL
Belconnen United trailed to West Canberra Wanderers until the closing stages of the first-half at McKellar Park, before equalising and running out 5-1 winners to maintain their unbeaten run. Canberra Olympic did enough to squeeze past Gungahlin United at O’Connor Enclosed, the match-winner netted by Madelyn Whittall, whilst Canberra Croatia were too strong for Tuggeranong United at Deakin Stadium.
GOAL OF THE WEEK
A long-range thunderbolt from Reilly Yuen wins this week’s Goal of the Week, the Belconnen United striker smashing home from a free-kick out wide, the trajectory of the ball too much for West Canberra Wanderers goalkeeper Amy Wiggan.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
The Blue Devils may have run over the top of West Canberra Wanderers at the end of ninety minutes, but few could fault the defensive efforts of Stephanis Nikias for the away team. Her efforts in the Wanderers backline were superb, and she nullified the threat of the Blue Devils front-line for large part of the contest.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
COMING SOON
The top four meet this weekend in Round 9 of the NPLW as first meets third, when Belconnen United travel to play Gungahlin United at Gungahlin Enclosed, and second plays fourth as Canberra Olympic are visiting Canberra Croatia at Deakin Stadium. Meanwhile, ANU WFC are at home to West Canberra Wanderers, Hawker Football Centre the venue for that one.
