Yoogali SC were denied what would have been a second win of the season as Queanbeyan City scored an 86th minute equaliser to rescue a point from their journey to Griffith and move four points clear at the top of the table.
Michael Mensah struck late on to level the match and keep Queanbeyan’s unbeaten record intact although the visiting side did fail to win for the first time this season and could see their advantage at the top reduced to a point if Tuggeranong United win their game in hand after their match against White Eagles was postponed.
Yoogali had led for close to an hour after Mason Donadel hit his second goal of the season on the half-hour as a tense and exciting match appeared to be heading the way of the former Grand Finalists. And, whilst Mensah’s goal ensured a draw, a decent result against the leaders, Yoogali unluckily slipped further off the top four pace.
With Tuggeranong not in action, ANU FC took advantage to move to within three points of the Southsiders as they routed Weston-Molonglo FC 7-2 in a remarkable game at ANU South Oval.
An early goal from Chase Deans indicated that the University side would be in control against the team propping up the league table, but John O’Gorman stunned the home side with a 20th minute equalising goal. That seemed to poke the bear and quickfire goals from Hassan Alnuwaysir and Tim Lopez had ANU FC 3-1 up by half-an-hour.
Max Mottl made it four, but to their credit the Magpies hit back again when Chris McEwan struck for the second time in 2022. Again though, ANU FC responded rapidly as Liam Neeson used his particular set of skills to make the half-time score a barely believable 5-2 to the home side.
Second half goals from Sasha Vujic and Mottl, his second of the afternoon, made sure that ANU FC would bolster their goal difference and inflict another heavy loss on Weston-Molonglo FC.
There was an eight-goal thriller at Ipan Park as Brindabella Blues came out on top by five goals to three against Wagga City Wanderers.
Jamie Ward scored a brace, opening the scoring after only five minutes and adding a second before half-time. In between Curtis Schaeffer, who would also end the match with two goals, had extended the Blues advantage as Wagga City Wanderers struggled to come to terms with the home team.
The second stanza was a more even affair and the Wanderers actually shaded it on goals, scoring three times through Nashwan Sulaiman, Thomas Matheson and leading scorer Jake Ploenges.
Unfortunately for the visitors, Schaeffer and Oliver Witrzens netted in response to seal an entertaining win for the Blues.
