Belconnen United moved to the top of the Women’s National Premier League Reserves competition with a convincing 11-0 hammering of West Canberra Wanderers at McKellar Park.
The hosts were in emphatic form from the off and were two up in thirteen minutes as Liliana Altamore opened her account for the day with the first of four goals, before Scarlett Wells made it 2-0.
Lisa Cary added a third, and further goal from Leila Billington and Altamore had the Blue Devils five to the good by the half-time break.
More was to come after the interval as Altamore added a brace to her first-half tally, Wells struck two more to complete a hat-trick, Billington got her second and Danielja Eskinja rounded it off in the final minute.
Canberra Croatia eased to a midweek win in their Round 1 catch-up fixture against Gungahlin United at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval as they came from 1-0 behind at half-time to win 5-1 and move level on points with Belconnen United.
Josephine McKenzie had given the Gunners a tenth minute lead, one that they were to hold until the half-time break, but two goals in quick succession straight after the interval from Pia McGhie and Emily Hazillas turned the match on its head.
The third, netted by Rhiannon Fensom was the killer goal, late strikes from Tahli Milin and Ava Williams adding gloss to the scoreboard.
Due to the inclement weather conditions across Canberra during the week, ACT Sportsgrounds were shut on the weekend meaning that the matches scheduled for Kambah 2, featuring Tuggeranong United against Majura FC, and O’Connor Enclosed, between Canberra Olympic and Canberra Croatia, were postponed.
