Eden Rodda claimed a hat-trick as Belconnen United finished strongly to see off Canberra Croatia by half-a-dozen goals to nil at Kaleen Enclosed on an overcast Sunday afternoon in the National Premier League Women’s Reserves competition.
Rodda scored the first two goals, one in each half, and added a third in the 77th minute which opened the floodgates for the home team who went on to score four goals in nine minutes.
Ariana Rathouski made it four before an own goal from Grace Holaj a minute later brought up the fifth. Young substitute Samantha Shea completed the scoring with a penalty four minutes from the end.
In their midweek catch-up match prior to Easter, Canberra Croatia finally got their season off and running and in some style as they blitzed ANU WFC 8-0. Amy Bongiorno scoffed twice, once in each half, after goals from Pia McGhie, Ellie Raymond and Rhiannon Fensom had seen Croatia into an early lead.
There was more to come after the break as Tahli Milin, Elizabeth Bartone and Arijana Majetic added to the mounting score, alongside Bongiorno’s second, as Croatia laid down their early season marker.
Gungahlin United got their first win of the season in their second game, and in comfortable fashion as Matylda Wells-Sheather struck twice in a 6-0 win over Majura FC on ANZAC Day at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval.
Wells-Sheather opened the scoring in each half, Jasmine Richards and Ella Hall having Gunners three to the good by the half-time interval, with Josei Montanti and Elizabeth Moss striking in the final nineteen minutes of the match to ensure three goals in each half and a big victory.
League leaders Canberra Olympic made it three wins from three as they saw off a spirited Tuggeranong United 4-1 at O’Connor Enclosed, Anna Bennett finding the net twice.
Sienna Ness put Olympic in front early on with her second goal of the season, before Bennett struck twice within the space of nine minutes to take the match away from the visiting team.
Georgia Choundary scored her first of the campaign ten minutes into the second-half, before Brianna Lazzari pulled one back three minutes later for Tuggeranong United, but it was little more than a consolation.
The match between ANU WFC and West Canberra Wanderers was postponed.
