Wagga City Wanderers roared to a second win of the season as they hammered West Canberra Wanderers 7-2 at Gissing Oval to move onto seven points in a weekend that saw half the fixture list postponed.
The home team were always in control of the match and were ahead by the seventeenth minute when Thomas Yongai struck the first of his double, closely followed by a strike from Kade Lyons to make it two.
Lyons would add a third before the break, eventually ending the contest with four goals to move onto five for the league season. Before then Marcus Grzic and Van Nguyen pulled goals back for West Canberra, sparking hopes of an unlikely comeback, but that was halted when Isasc Brooker made it 5-2.
Lyons completed a hat-trick in the final minute and still had time to bag a fourth in stoppage time to complete the thrashing.
In a match that was switched to the synthetic surface at Melrose, the home of West Canberra Wanderers, a solitary goal proved enough for Canberra Juventus to secure a 1-0 win over Brindabella Blues.
The strike came with fifteen minutes of the match remaining via Juventus forward Cristian Barresi and moved Juve up to fifth in the league table. The loss was the Blues’ third of the season.
Due to the inclement weather conditions scross Canberra during the week, ACT Sportsgrounds were shut on the weekend meaning that the matches scheduled for ANU South Oval, featuring ANU FC against Canberra Olympic, and Woden Park, between White Eagles and Belconnen United, were postponed.
