Canberra Olympic opened up a four-point gap at the top of the Capital Premier League table as they claimed an eighth win from nine outings with a comfortable 5-0 victory over West Canberra Wanderers at O’Connor Enclosed.
Olympic were always in command of the game, but it took a three-goal burst close to half-time for them to shake off the Wanderers. Zachary Milczarek gave them the lead in the fifteenth minute, before Julian Borgna opened the floodgates three minutes from half-time.
Stoppage time goals from Remi Gachet and Mark Shields suddenly saw Wanderers staring down a big defeat, but they recovered well in the second-half, conceding just once ore as Borgna grabbed his second, and seventh of the season.
Belconnen United slipped off the pace at the top of the table as they were held to a 1-1 draw by ANU FC South Oval, the point leaving the University team in third place, three behind the Blue Devils and seven off top spot.
Both goals were scored in the first-half of the match, and it was Belconnen who were to open the scoring in the twentieth minutes the industrious Jake Bishop broke the deadlock with his fourth league goal of the season.
The students weren’t trailing for long however and ensured they would end the game with a share of the spoils as Nicholas Hope levelled matters and, despite chances for both teams, the game ended all-square.
Brindabella Blues took advantage of the ANU and Belconnen dropping of points to close the gap in fourth position with an excellent 4-1 away victory over Wagga City Wanderers at Gissing Oval.
Finn Harmer put the Blues ahead in the thirteenth minute, and that was an advantage they were to hold until ten minutes into the second-half before Kade Lyons equalised for Wanderers with his seventh goal of the campaign.
The turning point was two goals in two minutes for the visiting team as Harmer and Curtis Schaeffer struck either side of the hour mark, Nikolas Blaskovic settling matters once and for all with the fourth in the final minute of the fixture.
Six goals were shared at Ainslie as Canberra Juventus and White Eagles played out a hugely entertaining 3-3 draw for a decent crowd, a result that meant both missed the chance to close the gap on the teams above them in the top four places.
In a ding-dong battle Jasper Milin gave Juventus the lead early on, only for Sergio Lindner to level the scores before half-time. Cristian Barresi restored Juventus’ lead with a 54th minute goal before the match exploded in the final eighteen minutes.
Lindner brought Eagles back on terms with his ninth goal of the season, and when Ali Sohani struck with three minutes left, a major result was on the cards. Juventus rescued themselves five minutes into stoppage time though when Barresi scored his second from the penalty spot.
