Course Levels


LEVEL 1 REFEREE (THEORY)


The FFA Level 1 Referee course provides the theoretical education for referees who aspire to officiate in matches in the top tiers of senior football in Capital Football or any other member federation. This course is open to any current Level 2 Referee who wants to develop their knowledge and interpretations of the Laws of the Game.

The course consists of 8 hours of classroom-based training including Laws of the Game examinations (written responses, multiple choice and video incidents).

Once the Theory component is completed you have the option to undertake the remaining practical units to gain the ‘full’ qualification as a Level 1 Referee. For the practical components, you will be assessed on your performance as a Referee and Assistant Referee on one senior match respectively.

The Level 1 Referee courses are conducted by an FFA Level 1 Instructor and hosted by a Member Federation. The course costs $150.00. FFA will provide the curriculum and teaching materials.

Prerequisites

Potential candidates who wish to complete the FFA Level 1 Referee Course must meet the following pre-requisites before enrolling in the course.

To undertake the Theory component participants must:

  • be at least 18 years old at the commencement of the training program;
  • be currently registered with FFA; and
  • hold a current Level 2 or Level 2T Referee qualification.

To undertake the Practical component participants must:

  • hold a current Level 1 (Theory) Referee qualification.

If you failed to complete any of the Laws of the Game examinations on the day, click here to organise a time to resit the exam(s) that you did not pass.

If you successfully passed all Laws of the Game examinations you will be granted a Level 1T qualification.

If you want to complete the Level 1 course click here to organise your two practical match assessments. You must be assessed by a Capital Football Assessor on your performance as a Referee (two) AND an Assistant Referee. You are also required to complete a mentoring program during this time.

LEVEL 2 REFEREE (THEORY)


The FFA Level 2 Referee course provides the theoretical education for referees who aspire to officiate in matches ranging from junior football to the top tiers of senior football in Capital Football or any other member federation. This course is open to any current Level 3 Referee who wants to develop their knowledge and interpretations of the Laws of the Game.

The course consists of 6-8 hours of classroom-based training including Laws of the Game examinations (written responses, multiple choice and video incidents).

Once the Theory component is completed you have the option to undertake the remaining practical units to gain the ‘full’ qualification as a Level 2 Referee. For the practical components, you will be assessed on your performance as a Referee and Assistant Referee on one senior match respectively.

The Level 2 Referee course costs $150.00. FFA will provide the curriculum and teaching materials.

LEVEL 3 REFEREE


The FFA Level 3 Referee course is the final course in the community football referee program.

The Level 3 Referee course builds on the basics developed in the Level 4 Referee program and is targeted at match officials who have progressed as a community referee and are looking at officiating top-tier junior matches to lower divisions of adult football.

Courses are run over a full day of classroom work and includes two practical match assessments after successfully completing all of the theory units.

The Level 4 Referee course costs $100.00. FFA will provide the curriculum and teaching materials.

Prerequisites

Potential candidates who wish to complete the FFA Level 3 Referee Course must meet the following pre-requisites before enrolling in the course.

Participants must:

  • be at least 16 years old at the commencement of the training program;
  • be currently registered with FFA; and
  • hold a current Level 4 Referee qualification.
