The 2024 National Futsal Championships kicked off at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre today, welcoming over 1,000 participants from across the country.
The tournament returned to the Sunshine State for the first time since 2006, with 58 matches played across eight pitches on the opening day featuring teams from across seven Member Federations.
422 goals were scored on Day 1, with Capital Football and Football Queensland sides showing they were a force to be reckoned with as both Member Federations recorded a 64% win rate.
A Kiran Vikan hat-trick helped the U12 Boys to start with a win, an 8-1 hammering of Victoria getting them off to a flying start, whilst Jacob Pratezina netted six in two games for the U13’s who followed a memorable 6-6 draw with South Australia by defeating NSW Metro by the odd-goal in seven.
The U14 Boys were beaten 5-4 by Victoria in a thriller, but there was better luck for the U15 with a brace of wins, belting South Australia, before recording a 4-1 success over NSW Metro, Jasper Noyen (6) and Michael Pratezina (4) amongst the goals. The Youth Men defeated Victoria 6-2 in their opener, Atiya Waraga and Bailey Dickinson both scoring twice, however the Open Men fell 1-4 to Victoria Fitzroy despite a Nicholas Subasic goal.
In the Girls competition, Danijela Eskinja bagged four in a comprehensive U13 team performance that saw them score double-figures against South Australia Red, while the U15 Girls came out on top against NSW Country winning 6-1, Lily Altamore and Lucija Peric scoring a brace apiece.
There were mixed fortunes for the U17 Girls, a 4-1 win over South Australia followed by a 1-3 loss to NSW Metro where two late goals ensured NSW claimed victory in an exciting match. Meanwhile, the Colts fell to a loss in their opening game and the Cobras saw off Victoria Evolution 6-4 with half a dozen different goalscorers.
