There were mixed fortunes for Capital Football’s representative on Day Two of the National Futsal Championships 2024 as big wins for some squads were followed by narrow losses for others, but most teams remain well placed to push for a place in the knockout phase of the competition.
The two Open Women’s teams suffered mixed fortunes, the Colts falling to a 2-5 loss to Queensland Maroon despite first goals of the competition for Jada Lamond and a penalty from Sienna Birnie.
Meanwhile, the Cobras made it two from two in the other pool, an own goal setting them on the way to victory over Queensland White, before Brittany Palombi, Olivia Gurney and Stella De Marco added to the tally to take the score to a comprehensive 4-0.
The U17 Girls recovered from a defeat in their second match of the tournament late yesterday afternoon by sweeping aside the challenge of NSW Country in a rampant second-half display to win 5-0. Maddie Steinacker netted twice in what was a dominant display from the group.
Goals were the order of the day for the U15 Girls as they smashed half-a-dozen past NSW Thunder, traditionally tough foes for Capital Football, with Lucija Peric and Tehya Aspland scoring twice apiece. They later added a further three in downing NSW Lightning to remain unbeaten with Peric and Aspland on target again, alongside Sienna Ness.
It was two from two for the U13 Girls as they defeated NSW Lightning 3-2 in the afternoon encounter, a wonderful result that sets them up nicely for the tournament, Danijela Eskinja scoring her fifth goal of the competition in the win.
Capital Football U12 Boys picked up one point from two matches but were highly entertaining in the process, scoring twelve goals in a 5-5 draw with NSW Lightning before losing 7-10 in a thriller against NSW Country. Dylan Altamore, Miro Wilkinson, Kiran Vikan and Alby Mackintosh were amongst the scorers again.
Football West proved too strong for the U14 Boys, winning the pool match 3-8, and inflicted a similar score on the U13 age group, succeeding 2-8. Incredibly, the U13 boys bounced back in their second game of the day, reversing the scoreline to defeat NSW Country by the score of 8-2, Lucas Villatobas with a treble.
A brace from Cadel Zwangobani helped Capital Football U15 to a 4-2 win over their Football West counterparts to continue their winning start to the competition, and they continued their fine form into the evening, swatting aside NSW Country with thirteen goals including a hat-trick from Michael Pratezina and a strike from goalkeeper Sean Maglasis.
A nine-goal thriller went the way of Queensland in the Youth opener on Day Two, a second brace in consecutive matches for Atiya Waraga not enough as the Capital Football Men’s Youth team fell short by the odd-goal in the nine, going down 4-5. They had better fortune later, coming from 1-3 behind to earn a 3-3 draw with Football West, Nicholas Pratezina with a pair.
It was disappointment for the Open Men though, as despite goals from Nicholas Subasic, from the penalty spot, and Jono Ciminelli, they fell to a narrow loss to a highly technical Football West Cumbre outfit. The men from Western Australia taking the points on offer with a 4-2 success.
